Surprise

This sculpture was created with the aim of initially deceiving the viewer. In the work’s shadow, the face of a young girl appears, “peeking out” in surprise with her mouth open.

Most people (90–95%) fail to spot this face at first, seeing instead various other images conjured by their imagination. Yet, the moment they finally do see it—the instant realization strikes—they adopt that same look of surprise.

That is precisely the work’s objective: to elicit that very surprise. The piece was donated to the Herakleidon Museum following my solo exhibition there in 2018.
