Louis at the Louvre
This sculpture was commissioned by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to be exhibited in the place of the Spyros Louis Cup during its visit to Paris on the occasion of the 2024 Olympic Games.
It is a rotating shadow sculpture, during the rotation of which three different images are gradually revealed in its shadow.
In the first image, a runner is seen running among aquatic plants and two birds, which refer to the representations of the cup and the marshes of the Marathon area.
The runner, that is, every person, wants to reach his goal. There he will be “completed”. If you notice, the leaf on the far right in the image, where he “finishes”, has the same shape as the black area on the runner’s body and will fit into this “gap” that exists in the body.
However, because I believe that man must continue his effort, I made this sheet slightly smaller, something that will be difficult to perceive with the eye, so that there is the motivation to continue.
In the second image, Paris is visible. In the center of the image and one level behind the other buildings, so that it stands out and gives depth to the symbolism, is the Louvre Pyramid, where the Spyros Louis Cup was exhibited during the Paris Olympic Games.
In the third image, another representation of the cup is visible, in which a bird chasing a dragonfly can be seen, in small dimensions.
Louis at the Louvre
“Life goes in circles”…
Like the bird chasing the dragonfly
around the Louis cup…
And that in turn
goes around the world…
And the time has come
to go back to the country of his birth…
Where Bréal was inspired by the marathon
and where he designed the Louis cup.
Louis in the Louvre…
But his shadows,
leave behind memories…
And the five circles there,
running non-stop,
as if in a foot race…
In an Olympic marathon,
around the lake with the dragonflies.
