Earthquake
Listen to the description
In 1829, two earthquakes brought the city of Xanthi to its knees, destroying houses and memories, leaving behind them silence and dust. In the shadow of the work one can see a small town.
The artist in this work does not specify the time. We do not know whether it is day or night. The black background leads us to the conclusion that it is evening. But if one observes carefully, one will see that in the background there is the ridge of Xanthi, as the artist sees it from his house (the right peak is The Egg).
So, above the ridge there is light – so it is day. Also, some windows are illuminated (so it is evening) and others are dark. In the sculpture as you can see there are houses, a church and a mosque. They all had the same fate. You see, nature does not distinguish between religions and social classes. After the roar of the earthquake, apparently everyone went silent.
