But the wars in 1912 abruptly interrupted this economic and residential development, leaving deep wounds. During the Bulgarian occupations (1st and 2nd) Xanthi suffered terrible losses in human lives, property, relics and archives. Xanthi was liberated in 1919. After the end of World War I and the Asia Minor catastrophe, Xanthi began to recover again.
