Xanthi thus entered the rhythm of the belle époque, experiencing wealth and prosperity, light and extroversion, as tobacco, trade and ideas traveled far and wide. The inns by the end of the 19th century exceeded 50 and were all filled with merchants and visitors. The carriages with the gentlemen and ladies with their ornate hats circulated through the alleys of today’s old town.
