Bell Tower
Listen to the description
The sculpture “Bell Tower” was created in 2016 for the film “Roza of Smyrna” (directed by Giorgos Kordelas).
The bell tower of Agia Fotini in Smyrna can be seen in the shadow. For its construction, photographs of the old bell tower as well as photographs and drawings of the new bell tower built in Nea Smyrna, were used.
In the sculpture, one can also distinguish various elements that do not participate in the shadow but provide information. One such element is the image of Saint Fotini on the sculpture, which gives identity to the bell tower, it associates it with the specific Saint.
In addition, it also affects the shape of the sculpture. In order to place an image of a Saint, the sculpture was given the shape of a shrine… Flowers were also added at various points as is customary in churches.
The flames refer to the fire that destroyed Smyrna and the bell tower. On the bottom of the sculpture, the blue surface in combination with the silver cardboards that stand upright on it refer to the sea and the ships on which the Greeks left Smyrna, having taken with them a few things in a suitcase and memories (empty frame).
